China performs highest abortions in world

China performs more abortions than any other country in the world, about 13 million a year, mostly for young single women who aren't using contraception. One expert says the figures show many Chinese now consider the cheap, widely available procedure an acceptable form of birth control.

In a rare disclosure of family planning statistics — which are considered state secrets — the official China Daily newspaper reported Thursday that about 13 million surgical abortions are performed in Chinese hospitals and 10 million abortion pills are sold every year. The pills can induce an abortion very early in pregnancy, and are commonly referred to as the morning-after pill.

The report said the real number of abortions is believed to be even higher since many are done outside of hospitals in unregistered rural clinics.

Ma Xiaonian — a well-known sex therapist who hosted a popular sex-focused talk show that was pulled off the air in 2007 for being too racy — said that the abortion figures showed the inadequacy of China's sex education.

"Young women don't know how to protect themselves when protection is most needed," he said. "Secondary school kids (aged about 13-16) are already having abortions. ... So it's not too early to start giving them sex education at that time but often they don't even get it until college."

Sex education is a part of school curriculums in China, in which students learn about sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS, but discussions about sex are vague and condom use is rarely addressed.

The China Daily article called the widespread use of abortions "an unfortunate situation" but did not directly say whether abortions were on the rise. No year-to-year statistics were given.

The most recent figures available for abortions in China come from the World Health Organization and the Guttmacher Institute, which estimated that China performed 9 million such procedures in 2003, more than any other country. Russia had the world's highest abortion rate, with 53.7 per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44, the 2007 report said. China's rate of abortions was about 24 for every 1,000 women, it said.

Therese Hesketh, a lecturer at the Centre for International Health and Development at University College London who has extensively studied family planning policies in China, said the 13 million figure sounded accurate, if perhaps a little low. She said there is little doubt that abortion figures have risen in China as attitudes toward sex have liberalized.

Chinese have become much more open about sex amid the sweeping economic and social reforms of the last several decades, and today are generally accepting of premarital sex. Sex shops selling erotic toys, books, condoms and lubricant are commonplace. Web sites, books and movies with graphic sexual content are all widely available, though pornography is technically banned.

Australia making tougher rules to protect foreign students

The Australian government is bringing in tougher rules to protect international students from dubious operators, a minister told Parliament on Wednesday. The move follows a string of attacks on Indian students and reports of overseas students being exploited.

"The message to providers is, if you're not providing your students with a quality education in a safe environment, clean up your act or risk being shut down," The Age quoted Education Minister Julia Gillard as telling Parliament on Wednesday.

Gillard was introducing amendments to the law regulating schools that provide courses to the nearly half a million overseas students who come to Australia each year, the report said.

She said the industry had grown too fast, with insufficient checks and balances, which attracted a small number of unscrupulous operators.

"We need to weed out the shonky operators," she said.

It will now require all institutions registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students to re-register under tougher criteria by the end of next year and make the use of education agents "more transparent and accountable".

Gillard said requiring re-registration would restore confidence in the quality of Australian education.

She said all providers would have to publish a list of the agents, whether within or outside Australia, they use.

The government was also considering forcing providers to develop websites to allow students to make anonymous comments about agents.

Nearly 100,000 students from India are enrolled in various courses in Australia. The assaults on Indian students and reports of colleges exploiting international students had caused uproar in India.
ndia's External Affairs Minister SM Krishna had visited Australia, during which he was assured that students would be protected. The attacks had caused concern in Australia's education sector with many fearing a significant drop in the number of students enrolling here.

Former Liberal MP Bruce Baird was recently appointed to review the laws covering overseas student services.

"We'll take advice from the Baird review, but this is the first, important step in the process of cleaning up an industry that has grown too fast, too soon," Gillard said.

Bollywood choreographer-director Farah Khan says it was a conscious decision to start her new television chat show with actor Salman Khan and his mother Salma, who has never given an interview before. And interestingly, the 'Tere Mere Beach Mein' series ends with none other than Shah Rukh Khan.

'It was a joint decision taken by the channel and me. They felt that the episode turned out to be very candid and since Salman has never come on a chat show before, it could be a nice way to hook on the audience to the show. So we start with Salman and end it with Shah Rukh,' Farah told IANS.

She said it wasn't difficult at all to convince Salman and his mother to be her first guests on the show that starts Sunday on STAR Plus.

'Salman has never come on a chat show - neither 'Koffee With Karan' nor 'Oye! It's Friday' and not even 'Rendezvous with Simi Garewal'. It's for the first time he's come on a chat show. His mother has never in her life come on a TV show or even given a print interview. And I just had to tell them once. It was very easy to convince them to come,' said Farah.

The filmmaker managed to get several celebrities on her debut chat show but couldn't get her dream guests - former railway minister Lalu Prasad and singer-actor Himesh Reshammiya.

'I really wanted to get Lalu-ji and Himesh together for my show. But he (Lalu) had a cataract operation and so things couldn't work out. But I really hope these two people come to my show, if I have a second season,' said Farah.

To give her chat show a twist, Farah has a separate theme for each episode. She brought Salman to talk about being a 'Mamma's boy' and Shah Rukh Khan as a henpecked husband. She had Priyanka Chopra talk about her struggle as an actor.

Asked what the theme for the Lalu-Himesh episode would have been, she said: 'I wanted to get them in a category of 'I don't care people'. And these two people are such that no matter how much people imitate them, ridicule them or mimic them, they just don't care. They only do their work.'

Other guests on her show will include Hrithik Roshan, Asin Thottumkal, Deepika Padukone, Abhay Deol, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Kareena Kapoor and cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan.

'Tere Mere Beach Mein' will be telecast every Saturday and Sunday at 9 p.m.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan is keeping his finger crossed for success of upcoming film 'Wanted'.

Produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Prabhu Deva, the film features Ayesha Takia Azmi opposite Salman Khan apart from actors like Mahesh Manjrekar, Asseem Merchant.

"I have done lot of love stories, lot of comedies, many of them were not appreciated enough. In this film, I had the zest to work hard. I have done that. So, let's see if it works and if it doesn't," he said.

The film is about Radhe, played by Salman Khan, who is a hardcore gangster, a sharpshooter and works for a dreaded Mafia.

He then finds love when the young and pretty Jhanvi, played by Ayesha Takia Azmi, professes her love for him.

Khan said the film is a combination of all the ingredients in good quantity and they all had to undergo good deal of training for it.

"Our films are usually a combination of all things in small proportions. Little bit dance, little bit romance and little bit comedy. But this film has everything in huge proportions, so had to train hard," said Khan.

Khan has lent his voice to the title track of the film, composed by composer duo Sajid-Wajid.

He had last sung for the film, Pyaar Kiya to Darna Kya in 1998.

SRK to frisk Angelina?

After his much publicized row over the frisking hassle during his recent US trip, SRK held a press meet to set things straight. Speaking to media persons, the King of Bollywood agreed that he respected the law of the land but what really triggered his annoyance was the deliberate attempt by the American immigration personnel to make this usual procedure an ordeal for him.
He said, ''I don't want to be treated differently from the rest of the people. But, what made me furious was the fact that the immigration authorities at the airport wanted someone to vouch for my identity despite the fact that a huge crowd had gathered to take my autograph. Even when a senior airport official came forward to vouch for me, the immigration authorities were relentless with the interrogation.''
Though SRK's frisking has evoked mixed reactions from various quarters with some people calling this row a publicity stunt. Replying to such allegations, SRK says, ''I don't need to create cheap publicity stunts when everyone knows who SRK is. And why would I engage in such thrills when my film is still nine months away from its release date.''
When asked about how we should treat the Hollywood celebs, SRK in his candid mood added, ''I heard Angelina Jolie is coming to town soon. I would like to frisk her this time since I know what it means to go through such an ordeal.''
It must be recalled that SRK returned from US today after attending a special Independence day function organized by the Indian community.

Bitter truth: India drought may trigger world sugar crisis

India has enough grain stocks to ride out an expected poor harvest, but the failure of the monsoon adds to global uncertainty about food and grain stocks, the head of an agricultural think tank said on Wednesday.

India's monsoon rains have been 29 per cent below normal since the beginning of the June-September season, hurting crops such as rice and cane and triggering a sharp rise in food prices in India and sugar futures abroad.

For the time being, India has built up sufficient grains stocks, said Joachim von Braun, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute, but warned that the uneven rainfall has raised concerns.

"If government food distribution systems and national markets operate well, there should not be any serious issue for increasing hunger," he said in Beijing.

"But it will draw down stocks and that will make the international market again more nervous. It is very difficult to rebuild stocks from the low levels we have."

IFPRI in April released a report that warned of a rush by wealthier nations afraid of food shortages to buy agricultural land, particularly in Africa.

It called for standards of transparency and ethics in the acquisitions, to avoid people being displaced from land or food being exported during a crisis.

The deal spree was triggered by a spike in agricultural prices in 2008, as high energy prices triggered greater interest in biofuel, that caused many countries, especially in Asia, to limit exports and build domestic reserves.

"It's systematic, it's there to stay, and it shouldn't surprise us. The undermining of trust in trade through the export bans of last year... has not been forgotten," he said.

"It was a huge failing of the world trading system."

IFPRI has tracked land deals and leases totalling 20 million to 25 million hectares, an area greater than France, von Braun estimated. Investors in overseas land include hedge funds, private entrepreneurs and state-backed corporations, as well as government-to-government deals.

Between one-third and one-half of the overseas land deals studied by IFPRI have been for the purpose of growing crops for biofuels, he said

May be seeing beginning of recession's end - Obama

President Barack Obama said on Thursday the actions taken by his administration have helped stop an economic freefall and the United States may be seeing the "very beginnings" of the end of the recession.

Obama, addressing a raucous campaign rally for the Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, offered a spirited defense of policies implemented in his first 200 days in office to combat the worst U.S. economic crisis in decades.

"I'm convinced that actions we've taken in the first six months have helped stop our economic freefall," he told a crowd in Tysons Corner, Virginia, outside of Washington.

"We're losing jobs at half the rate we were at the beginning of this year."

"Our financial system is no longer on the verge of collapse. The market is up. Housing prices are up for the first time in nearly three years. So we may just be seeing the very beginnings of the end of this recession," he added.

Obama acknowledged more work is needed on recovery efforts but struck back at Republican critics, reminding his audience he had inherited the economic crisis when he took office in January. It began under his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush.

"I don't want the folks who created the mess to do a lot of talking. I want them to get out of the way so we can clean up the mess," Obama said to loud cheers.

Many Republicans have accused Obama of making economic matters worse by trying to spend the country out of recession.

Obama spoke after a government report showed the number of U.S. workers submitting new claims for jobless benefits fell sharply last week, fanning hopes the fragile labor market was on the mend and the broader economy was stabilizing.

Earlier, top White House economic adviser Christina Romer cautioned, though, that economic recovery will be painful and Friday's widely watched report on July unemployment likely will show hundreds of thousands more jobs were lost.

Remembering Michael Jackson: a friend who sponsored her holidays

How would it feel if your holidays were paid for by Michael Jackson? Susan Essien Etok would know. The 32-year-old Briton fondly remembers all the holidays sponsored by the late 'king of pop', thanks to their friendship for 12 years.
The legendary singer paid for her holidays to Africa, the Middle East and South America during the last three years. And Susan, who holds a PhD in Biomedical Materials Engineering from Cranfield University in Bedfordshire, had several times stayed at Jackson's Neverland ranch in California.
Whenever Michael came to London, they met and renewed their friendship.
'I never knew how much I have spent for my holidays as it was always Michael who paid for my trips. He was so generous towards his friends and I was lucky to have him as a friend,' Susan told IANS.
While doing her bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering at Loughborough University in 1995-98, Susan did a bit of modelling and appeared in a series of Pepsi advertisements. She also acted as an extra in 1998 in a Hollywood movie 'Free Enterprise', which was shot in downtown Los Angeles.
While she is hesitant to reveal the person who introduced her to Jackson, she clearly remembers the day they met after she finished filming in Los Angeles.
'We all hung out together and got on well immediately. Michael and I had a similar sense of humour and we used to laugh and make fun of each other a lot,' Susan said.
'Michael was a very kind and generous human being. He was innocent and had the heart of a child,' she added.
According to Susan, Michael led a very normal life behind closed doors. He loved his kids Blanket, Prince and Paris... they were his life. However, she says, Paris was clearly a daddy's girl and was fiercely protective of him -- as was visible from her moving tribute at his memorial service.
The last time Susan spoke to Michael was two weeks before his untimely death.
'He was very much looking forward to his last London music tour, but at the same
time he was a bit scared because he did not know how the Londoners would receive his tour,' she said.
Susan and her family were looking forward to be a part of Jackson's comeback tour. Her brother Richard Etok, a celebrity cosmetic dentist of the Chelsea Dental Practice in London, had done tooth whitening treatment for Jackson over the years. But due to patient confidentiality laws in Britain, he is not supposed to talk about the singer as a patient.
Michael had financial worries during his last days. Susan feels sad that he died worried about money even though he had assets worth billions of dollars. She believes that Jackson must have given $300 million to charities all over the world, which the media and his nemesis forget.
Susan had signed a non-disclosure agreement with the singer not to reveal anything about his life, when he was alive. Though she knows personal details about the pop star, she is reluctant to reveal them as he is still too dear to her.
'I am a private person; therefore I try and stay away from the limelight. I just want a normal life, which Michael couldn't have,' said Susan.
It's more than a month since Michael Jackson died and stories about the cause of his death are still doing the rounds. But for Susan, her friend Michael will always be alive.

United States presidents' secrets revealed

A new book has taken the lid off the secret lives of US presidents, as described by Secret Service agents who have protected them over the years.
The book, titled 'In the President's Secret Service', written by New York Times best-selling author and Newsmax chief Washington correspondent Ronald Kessler, is based on exclusive interviews with more than a hundred current and former agents.
The book has spilled spicy details about former and current White House residents, right from John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton to Barack Obama
The presidents and their lives covered by the book are as follows:
John F. Kennedy
Secret Service agents assigned to John F. Kennedy revealed that he led a double life.
He was the charismatic leader of the free world, but in his other life he was the cheating, reckless husband whose aides snuck women into the White House to appease his sexual appetite.
According to Secret Service agents, Kennedy had sex with Marilyn Monroe at New York hotels and in a loft above the Justice Department office of then-Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, the president's brother.
Besides one-night stands, Kennedy had several consorts within the White House, some of whom would even have threesomes with Kennedy.
Lyndon Johnson
Secret Service agents said that Lyndon B. Johnson was uncouth, nasty and often drunk.
In fact, once Lady Bird Johnson caught him having sex on a sofa in the Oval Office with one of his secretaries. Johnson became furious at the Secret Service for not warning him.
Johnson had a "stable" of women with whom he had sex, including some who stayed at the ranch when Lady Bird was home, said another former agent.
Air Force One crew members have said that Johnson often closed the door to his stateroom and spent hours alone locked up with pretty secretaries, even when his wife was on board.
Richard Nixon
The Secret Service found Richard Nixon and his family to be the strangest protectees.
"He never held hands with his wife," The New York Post quoted a Secret Service agent as saying.
The couple slept in different bedrooms. Also, the president's wife Pat Nixon was an alcoholic who tippled martinis.
Quite contrary to his blustering in taped conversations, Nixon seemed passive and often out of it when in private. However, he did have a sense of humour.
Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter was known by the Secret Service as the least likeable modern president.
At a press conference, Carter denied reports that White House aides had to ask him for permission to use the tennis courts.
In fact, even when he was travelling on Air Force One, Carter insisted that aides ask him for permission.
Carter thought of himself as a better runner than his Secret Service agents and would challenge them to races.
Ronald Reagan
The book revealed that Ronald Reagan was just like his cowboy persona, real and down to earth.
Quite often Reagan quietly wrote personal checks to people who had written him with hard-luck stories.
George H.W. Bush
George H.W. Bush was a favourite of the Secret Service.
William Clinton
Bill Clinton often strained agents' patience with his chronic tardiness.
"Anywhere he went, he shook hands; he'd go out of his way to shake the hand of a worker," says a former agent who was on his detail.
But Clinton's wings were clipped after he confessed in 1998 to a relationship that was "wrong" with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
His wife Hillary Clinton kept a check on his moves and made him do things her way.
"Clinton loves mingling with people and he loves to play golf, but she was having none of that. He was being punished. It was like he was grounded," said an agent.
Barack Obama and John McCain
The Secret Service began protecting Barack Obama in May 2007, 18 months before the presidential elections. It was the earliest point at which the Secret Service had ever protected a candidate.
Agents have said that Obama and wife Michelle treat them with respect, as does Vice President Joe Biden.
However, agents do not have the same opinion on Republican leader John McCain, and said that he was irritable, impatient and displayed his famous temper over trivial annoyances.

It's President Barack Obama's 48th birthday Tuesday, but rather than take a day off and have fun with the family, he will be having lunch with Senate Democrats at the White House.
'Chuck E. Cheese was booked,' White House press secretary Robert Gibbs joked during his daily White House press briefing Monday. Formerly Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre and Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza is a chain of family entertainment centres.
They are likely to discuss health care, the economy, energy legislation and the so-called 'Cash for Clunkers' programme that would provide federal vouchers of up to $4,500 for people to trade in their vehicles for new ones that get better mileage.
Gibbs did not say how Obama would spend the remainder of his day.
Obama kicked off his birthday a few days early with a weekend trip to Camp David. Along with his wife, daughters and mother-in-law, he was joined Saturday by longtime Chicago pals Marty Nesbitt, chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority Board, and physician Eric Whitaker, along with several of the president's childhood friends from Hawaii, according to an administration official cited by the Washington Post.
At his Maryland getaway, the president played basketball and bowled. Obama, who was chided during the campaign for his unimpressive bowling skills, bowled a 144 over the weekend, Gibbs said, a marked improvement from the 37 and gutter balls Obama rolled as a presidential candidate in March 2008 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

‘Taliban may hijack airplanes to repeat 9/11’

Pakistan intelligence authorities have warned that the Taliban may hijack airplanes to carry out a terror strike similar to 9/11. Quoting from an intelligence report, a private television channel said that some detained Taliban operatives have revealed that their associates often use commercial airlines operating in the country to travel from place to another, and are on the look out to hijack the airliners to repeat the September 11, 2001 incident.Intelligence agencies have also asked the concerned authorities to implement certain fundamental changes in the security procedures for commercial airliners to ensure safety of passengers and avoid any untoward incident, The Daily Times reports. World starting to pull out of deep recession

The global economy is starting to pull out of its deepest recession since World War Two but recovery will be sluggish and policies need to remain supportive, the International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday.
In an update of its World Economic Outlook, the IMF said the global economy is likely to contract 1.4 percent this year, a touch steeper than the 1.3 percent decline it expected in April.
However, it now sees world economic growth of 2.5 percent in 2010, compared with an April projection of 1.9 percent.
"Financial conditions have improved more than expected, owing mainly to public intervention, and recent data suggest that the rate of decline in economic activity is moderating, although to varying degrees among regions," the IMF said.
The IMF said while the world's advanced economies are expected to recover slightly next year, growth will remain below potential until later in 2010, suggesting unemployment will continue to rise.
It said the U.S. economy will contract 2.6 percent this year, slightly less than it thought in April, with growth resuming in 2010 albeit at a mere 0.8 percent.
It said the euro-area economy would shrink by 4.8 percent in 2009, a downward revision of 0.6 percentage point from its April forecast. Next year, the IMF said the euro-area would contract 0.3 percent, slightly less than it forecast in April.
Japan's economy is expected to contract by 6 percent this year, with growth resuming slightly to around 1.7 percent next year, the IMF said.
Emerging and developing countries are likely to regain growth momentum during the second half of 2009, it said.
The fund said policies should remain supportive until growth resumes and deflationary risks dissipate. Where there is room, central banks should explore cutting interest rates further and signal that they intend to keep them low until a durable recovery is under way.
In a separate updated report, the fund underscored the need for sustained economic stimulus.
"Financial conditions have improved, as unprecedented policy intervention has reduced the risk of systemic collapse and expectations of economic recovery have risen," it said in an update to its global financial stability report.
"Nonetheless, vulnerabilities remain and complacency must be avoided."
In the update to its economic outlook, it said the main priority for policy-makers should be repairing the battered financial sectors, with a focus on removing toxic debt from bank balance sheets and restructuring institutions.
It said concerns about rising government debt from efforts to shore up economies highlight the need to establish plans to tighten budgets over the medium-term.
"Although fiscal policy should stay supportive through 2010, plans should be made for rebuilding fiscal balances and ensuring sustainable debt paths after growth is firmly re-established," the IMF said.

About 1.5 lakh Indians return from UAE due to Recession

An estimated 1.5 lakh Indian workers have come back home from the United Arab Emirates due to economic crisis and recession, the Lok Sabha was told on Wednesday.
Replying to a question, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi informed the House that an estimated 50,000 to 1,50,000 workers have returned to India as result of the delay in execution of projects due to economic slowdown and recession in the UAE.
He said most of the workers have returned to India on leave without pay with the expectation that they would be able to go back to the Gulf country once the situation improves.
Ravi said while Indian Missions in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar have informed that there has been some job losses in these countries, some Indians have also returned from Malaysia due to economic slowdown.
"Information received from Indian Missions in Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, Brunei, Libya, Jordan and Lebanon indicate that there is no report of Indians affected by the recession," the Minister said.
Noting that slowdown has affected almost all sections of people in the US, Ravi said, "Indians working in the US are mostly professionals and the extent of job losses by Indians is, therefore, slightly mitigated by their indispensability to their organisation."
Replying to a separate question, Ravi said the Government has already strengthened the Indian embassies in the US and UAE by posting counselors to render assistance to the Indian workers.
"They will be assisted by local Indian professionals in extending legal, medical and financial counselling to the workers in need," he added.

Muslim priests at 900-year old Shiva temple in Kashmir

Pahalgam (Jammu and Kashmir), July 8 (PTI) Situated on the banks of the icy Lidder river, a 900-year old Shiva temple is the only Hindu shrine in Kashmir valley which has Muslim priests. After the migration of Kashmiri Pandits from a nearby village, two Muslim priests - Mohmmad Abdullah and Ghulam Hassan kept the doors of the Mamalaka temple open and bells continued to toll.
"We not only took care of temple but also held ''aartis'' everyday," Ghulam Hasan told a visiting PTI correspondent here. Besides ensuring the safety of the 3-feet-long black stone "shivaling", Abdullah and Hassan have ensured no devotee goes without prasad even for a single day.

Two days before tennis star Sania Mirza's engagement, a youth who claim to be in love with her was arrested Wednesday for allegedly creating nuisance at her residence here.
Police said Mohammed Ashraf, 28, late Tuesday created a scene at the player's residence claiming that he is in love with Sania. The civil engineering student from Kerala demanded that her engagement be cancelled.
Ashraf along with his friend D. Mohanty went to Sania's house and had a heated argument with her father Imran Mirza. They demanded Imran cancel Sania's engagement.
India's number one woman tennis player's engagement is scheduled July 10 with Sohrab Mirza, son of a local businessman.
On a complaint from Imran Mirza, a case was registered at the Banjara Hills police station. Police Wednesday arrested Ashraf for trespass and making threatening calls to the player. He will be brought to a court later in the day.
Asharf told police that he was in love with Sania and wanted to marry her. On learning about Sania's scheduled engagement with a local man, Asharf and his friend went to her house to demand that the engagement be cancelled.
A police officer quoted Asharf as saying that he saw Sania playing in a tournament in Bangalore and fell in love with her. He was also sending messages and making threatening calls to Sania on her mobile phone.

L’Oréal, the French cosmetics giant, has been found guilty by the highest court in the French judiciary of racial discrimination, for considering women from the minority communities in France unworthy of selling its shampoos.
SOS Racisme, an anti-racist campaign group in France had filed the case.
France’s highest court was told that L’Oréal had sought an all-White sales staff to promote Fructis Style, a haircare product made by its beauty division, The Times reports.
The court was told that a Districom executive had sent a fax to its headquarters in 2000 saying that Garnier’s hostesses should be aged 18 to 22, wear size 38 to 42 clothes and be BBR.
The court was told that BBR (Blue, Black, Red) is an expression widely recognised in the French recruitment world as the code for White French people born to White French parents, in effect excluding the ethnic minorities.
Prosecutors said that Garnier wanted to exclude members of the minorities on the ground that they would be less likely to sell its shampoos in French shops, and also claimed that only 4.65 per cent of the hostesses hired for Garnier’s campaign were black, Asian or Arab.
The court has also found Adecco, the temporary recruitment agency whose Districom division hired the hostesses, guilty of racial discrimination.
The court found that the policy was illegal under French employment law.
“Its very great victory.Whatever the size of the company, none is able to escape prosecution,” said the vice-chariman of SOS Racisme, Samuel Thomas.
The judgment ends a three-year legal battle over discrimination charges, and while L’Oréal expressed disappointment at the judgment, Adecco refused make any comment.
The judgment is a major blow to L’Oréal’s image, which spends millions of dollars on advertisements featuring -Eva Longoria, Andie MacDowell, Penélope Cruz and Claudia Schiffer

Sri Lanka Cricket on Friday confirmed that India and New Zealand will play a triangular series along with the hosts during the Kiwis's tour in August.
The tri-series was "agreed with the Chairman, Secretary, Board of Cricket Control in India and the Chief Executive, New Zealand Cricket at discussions held with the Chairman and Secretary, SLC during their visit to the UK," a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket said on Friday.
India had been considering playing the series as it would provide them with crucial match practice ahead of the Champions Trophy in South Africa in September.

India are currently in the West Indies playing their last series before a lengthy break from competitive cricket.
With the New Zealand's tour for Test matches not expected to generate much public interest, India's inclusion for the one-dayers was welcomed by SLC, which would create great commercial interest.
"SLC would like to express its appreciation to the officials of BCCI for agreeing on an unscheduled tour, which would add an additional commercial benefit to the stakeholders of SLC, moreover a viewing pleasure to the cricket loving public in Sri Lanka," the release added.

Mystery surrounds Michael Jackson's sudden death

One day after Michael Jackson's sudden death, speculation was already turning to what killed the 50-year-old "King of Pop" just weeks before a long-awaited series of comeback concerts.
A family attorney said on Friday he had been concerned that Jackson's use of prescription drugs for dancing-related injuries would eventually prove fatal and that the entertainer's inner circle had ignored his warnings.
Authorities scheduled an autopsy for Friday. But they cautioned it could take weeks to determine a cause of death, which will likely have to wait for the return of toxicology tests. Those tests will determine if Jackson had any drugs, alcohol or prescription medications in his system.
Jackson, a former child star who became one of the best-selling pop artists of all time before descending into a strange and reclusive lifestyle amid accusations of child molestation, died Thursday afternoon at a Los Angeles hospital. He had been rushed to the hospital in full cardiac arrest after collapsing at his nearby rental home.
Jackson's passing was front-page news around the world as airwaves filled with his greatest hits from "Thriller" to "Billie Jean" and social networking sites were bombarded with messages and tributes from fans and musicians.
"It's so sad and shocking," former Beatle Paul McCartney said. "I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever."
Few details were known about the circumstances surrounding Jackson's death but he was reportedly unconscious and not breathing by the time he arrived at UCLA Medical Center. Doctors were unable to revive him.
His body was flown by helicopter from the hospital to the coroner's office late Thursday.
Lawyer Brian Oxman, a spokesman for the Jackson family, told CBS's "The Early Show" on Friday that he had been concerned about the prescription drugs that Jackson took due to injuries suffered while performing.
"I had warned everyone that I could warn and I told them that one day, Michael Jackson is going to wake up dead, which is a very odd way of putting it ...," Oxman said. "I do not want to point fingers at anyone because I want to hear what the toxicology report says and the coroner says but the plain fact of the matter is that Michael Jackson had prescription drugs at his disposal at all times.
Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide division searched Jackson's home in the upscale Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles at the behest of Chief William Bratton. But they called the investigation an "everyday" event.
Facing a battered reputation and a mountain of debts which The Wall Street Journal reported ran to $500 million, Jackson had spent the last two months rehearsing for the London concerts, including Wednesday night at the huge Staples Center arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.
In death, his music enjoyed a commercial renaissance that had eluded him for years. His songs surged to the top 15 slots on online retailer Amazon.com Inc's best-selling albums within hours.
TAINTED TALENT?
Jackson dominated the charts in the 1980s and is considered one of the most successful entertainers of the past century, with a lifetime sales tally estimated at 750 million records, 13 Grammy Awards and several seminal music videos to his name.
"Michael was and will remain one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived," said Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, Jackson's first label boss. "He was exceptional, artistic and original. He gave the world his heart and soul through his music."
Jackson's reputation as a singer and dancer was overshadowed in recent years by his increasingly abnormal appearance and bizarre lifestyle, which included his friendship with a chimp and a preference for the company of children.
He named his estate in the central California foothills Neverland Valley Ranch, in tribute to the J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan stories, and filled it with amusement park rides and a petting zoo.
Jackson was twice accused of molesting young boys and was charged in 2003 with child sexual abuse. He became even more reclusive following his 2005 acquittal and vowed he would never again live at Neverland.
Despite reports of Jackson's ill health, the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.
"I can't stop crying over the sad news," pop star Madonna said in a statement. "I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats but his music will live on forever."
Jackson was born on Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children and first performed with his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5.
His 1982 album "Thriller" yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million internationally.
The following year, he unveiled his signature "moonwalk" dance move, gliding across the stage and setting off an instant trend, while performing "Billie Jean" during an NBC special.
In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996.
"I'm so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. ... This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me," Presley said in statement.
Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999, and he later had another child with an unidentified surrogate mother.
He is survived by three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for his brief public appearance when his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony, causing widespread criticism

Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, who was arrested in Mumbai for alleged raping his domestic help, has been remanded to three-day police custody on Monday, says his defence lawyer, Srikant Shivde.
The actor was produced in Andheri court. He has been booked for rape under Section 376 and also charged under Section 339 for wrongful restraint and Section 506 for threatening another person.
On Sunday night Ahuja's domestic help launched a complaint alleging she was raped by the actor.
The preliminary medical report of the 18-year-old victim reportedly suggest that she was sexually abused. Ahuja has also been sent for medical examination.
The incident allegedly happened at the actor’s home in Mumbai’s Oshiwara area. Police say the victim was employed at Ahuja’s home for the past month-and-a-half.
During interrogation, Shiney reportedly confessed to having consensual sex with his maid.
Meanwhile, Shiney's family is firmly standing behind him. His cousin says that he (Shiney) is a man of character and that he is innocent.
The 36-year-old actor has acted in 13 movies and is popular for his work in films like - Gangster, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Life In A Metro.
He has also been known for his temperamental nature on film sets and this controversy may put roadblocks in his film career.
Ahuja is the son of an Army commander and is married to Anupam Auja. They have a two-year-old daughter.
When contacted, Anupama Ahuja said that she stands firmly behind her husband.
"I am proud to be Mrs Shiney Ahuja and I don't believe that he could have done this even for a minute," she told CNN-IBN.

'Finalists' were announced on Saturday by The Global Language Monitor, 'the newspaper of global English' in Austin, Texas that has tracked the English language from 2003.
Nudging 'alcopops' (sugary drinks), 'green-washing' (rebranding a product as eco-friendly) and 'octomom' (the mother of octuplets), are two Hinglish heavyweights: 'Jai Ho!' (translated as 'it is accomplished') and 'cuddies' (from 'chaddi', underwear). Slumdog Millionaire Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty told HT, "It's great that 'Jai Ho' is part of international vocabulary.
The other word may be less glorious, but it's part of life and has its rights, too."Best-selling Hinglish-using writer Chetan Bhagat said, "My friends are dancing in New York and London to 'Jai Ho! I think it's cute if it becomes an English word.

I remember that in the class 4 (or was it five?) history book we were prescribed, there was just one chapter that related to Islamic history, on Prophet Muhammad. But there was a chapter devoted to Simon Bolivar, the founder of Bolivia. In later classes too there was a curious lack of information on Islamic history. Had it not been for my readings outside of course material, I would never have known of Caliph Umar, the man under whom Islam became, in our modern terminology, a world power, or any of the other notable figures of Islamic history.
When in later years I came across writings on the contributions of Islam to modern civilization (mostly written by Muslim writers for a Muslim audience) I tended to look upon them with a great deal of skepticism. We all want to believe we are inheritors of a great civilization without which the world would not have progressed this far, as with others so with Muslims.
It was still later, though my readings of the renaissance, and Islam’s contribution to making it possible, that I gradually started believing these claims. That Islam indeed is the fountainhead of a civilization, much of which still flowed in the modern world.
Since then it has always worried me that there is so precious little known about Islam, about the side that gave men a sense of direction when they had none, and taught them to gaze at stars when the world itself was imperfectly known. Indeed there is so little of these in our mainstream, that talking about them is to talk not of history but of myths and fables. One has to labour against manifest disbelief and very often the labour is lost.
Listening to Obama’s speech in Cairo, after the spontaneous urge to applaud his assalam alailum had passed, the thing that moved me most was his acknowledgement of the great contributions to civilizations that Islam had made. To talk of compass, and algebra is to repeat the truisms of history, and yet these truisms bear repeating.
It is the first step in fighting negative stereotypes of Islam, which have so rankled with the Muslim world. Obama’s promise, that he would fight it wherever and whenever they appear, is heartening, as quite a lot of it comes from America itself. This should go a long way towards curbing the kind of gratuitous provocations (like the Danish cartoons) that had become fashionable in the aftermath of 9/11.
More than that, his speech was an acceptance of the cultural differences between Muslims and non Muslims. They would do certain things differently, look different, wear different clothes, and take their oath on the Quran rather than the Bible, and it was not just alright, but a matter of pride for America as it was a celebration of its cultural diversity and tolerance.
His comments on granting the Muslim women their right to wear the hijab (he pronounced it hajib, but no matter) would have an impact on Muslim women seeking to embrace modernity while remaining within the boundaries of their religion all over the world.
For decades popular culture had tended to see such women as prisoners of a regressive culture, the hijab itself has been portrayed as a symbol of suppression. Governments around the world have granted Muslim women the right to wear hijab uneasily, or have denied it altogether.
Obama’s comments should go some distance furthering their cause in countries as culturally diverse as France and Turkey.
Resolving conflicts
Apart from speaking on these larger issues which cannot be confined to a set timeframe, nor to any geographical locality, he spoke forcefully and candidly (quoting the Quran: “Be conscious of God, and speak the truth", and so, he said he would speak the truth) on some of the most grating points in US-Muslim relations, Iraq , Israel-Palestine conflict, Bosnia, the threat of militants in ‘a stretch of mountains,’ and Iran and its nuclear ambitions.
Quite a lot of it would have been music to Arab ears. In each of these theatres Obama made a decisive break, if not with policies – we are still to wait and watch how that pans out - with the rhetoric of his predecessor.
He said he was against Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands, and that the condition of Palestinians was "intolerable".
He said the US pursued no claim on the land or resources on Iraq; and sought no permanent military bases, neither in Afghanistan or Iraq. He even spelt out a timeframe for the withdrawal of combat troops and for the total withdrawal of US forces from Iraq (2012).
The tone he took towards Hamas was remarkably softer than that chosen by the Bush administration (in fact Bush’s speechwriter called it a major policy shift on Fox News which, by the way, was busy blasting the speech) and on Iran he put the no-nukes-for-Iran, in the larger context of no-nukes-for-the-world, and spelt out a vision where even the US would function sans its N arsenal.
All these efforts at a tight balancing act did not go unnoticed.
It would take away one of the main arguments against American approach in the Middle East that it follows double standards, that while it pats Israel on the back for its repeated incursions, military raids, and bombing campaigns against neighboring Arab states, it cries holy murder the moment Hamas fires rockets across the high wall Israel has built.
That while it expertly twiddles its thumbs when the Palestinians are blockaded into poverty and deprivation, it sets its entire diplomatic machinery in motion to condemn Hizbollah and Iran if some of Israel’s soldiers are killed or captured.
How far would his efforts go towards changing perceptions. And making a "new beginning?"
Well, that's a billion dollar question. On the one hand the speech would certainly improve the sentiment on the street, 'improve' being the operative word here, as opposed to 'change.' The principle players on the other hand (Iran, Israel, Hamas, Palestinian authority) would see in his speech the beginnings of a new approach, but would wait cautiously before actually modifying their positions. In fact that is exactly what they have done.
Israel ‘welcomed’ Obama’s speech, without referring to his settlement comments. Iran too welcomed the speech, but it too said nothing of his comments on nukes.
Palestinian Authority welcomed the two state solution but left out everything else. It is obvious that each cherry picked from the speech according to their convenience.
Another issue, that America should not be reduced to the stereotype of a hegemonic power, would only be resolved once America demonstrates in its deeds that it does not intend to behave like one. The impression has formed over long decades, when America relentlessly pursued imperialistic goals, changing regimes that were not conducive to its economic interests, supporting one side in a war, and then supporting the other depending which way its interest lay.
No single speech can wipe out that impression. The speech is a beginning, and unless it is followed by actions it would not bring about the desired change. That said, America remains popular, not just in Arab countries but in south Asian ones too, as a destination of opportunity. This sentiment may have been overwhelmed by the war on terror, but it is there. And in this America has an ally in its efforts to improve its image.
I hope – and one can but hope – that Muslims buy into the vision – as I did – of a world undivided by conflicts, free of nukes, and with equal rights and opportunity for everyone. Cynicism is like a self fulfilling prophecy, believe that an idea cannot succeed, and you damn its chances of success.
A vista of opportunity?
It would be naive to read in Obama’s speech a radical shift in its core policies, vis a vis, Israel or Iran. He is not about to start having dinner dates with Ahmadinejad, nor is he going to rattle America’s ballistic missiles at Israel and say, give up your nukes or else...
No, this is not happening. Broadly his policy objectives would remain the same as that of his predecessor. But his shift, in tone and tenor, is enough to give a chance to those who would want to come out of the barricades of their old positions.
It has long been said that even Hamas sees that Israel is going to remain in the midst of Arab states, and that it must work to move away from its position of denial of that fact. In fact the signals coming out of Hamas, right after it won the Palestinian elections, indicated that it was prepared to live with Israel as its neighbour.
It was America’s and Israel’s decision to deny the fruits of that election to Hamas, by blockading and then splitting Palestine, that made Hamas retreat back to its old rhetoric.
(On the way by the bye, America demonstrated that elections matter as long as they give the results America wants. If democracy gives results contrary to America’s interests, then too hell with the ballot, and out with the guns and bullets.)
That position now needs to be resurrected, as Obama said, “Israel is not going to go away.” To believe otherwise is wishful, and dangerous thinking. Obama’s speech, as the Hamas spokesperson said, may have been a projection of soft power, words designed to make US manufactured solutions more acceptable to the Arabs, and the Arabs seek not words but acts. But let’s make this clear, a statement of purpose by the President of the United States, whether it is followed by concrete steps or not, is an act in itself.
And if the width of my room partner’s grin, after listening to Obama’s speech is any indication, this act is already having an impact.

I remember that in the class 4 (or was it five?) history book we were prescribed, there was just one chapter that related to Islamic history, on Prophet Muhammad. But there was a chapter devoted to Simon Bolivar, the founder of Bolivia. In later classes too there was a curious lack of information on Islamic history. Had it not been for my readings outside of course material, I would never have known of Caliph Umar, the man under whom Islam became, in our modern terminology, a world power, or any of the other notable figures of Islamic history.
When in later years I came across writings on the contributions of Islam to modern civilization (mostly written by Muslim writers for a Muslim audience) I tended to look upon them with a great deal of skepticism. We all want to believe we are inheritors of a great civilization without which the world would not have progressed this far, as with others so with Muslims.
It was still later, though my readings of the renaissance, and Islam’s contribution to making it possible, that I gradually started believing these claims. That Islam indeed is the fountainhead of a civilization, much of which still flowed in the modern world.
Since then it has always worried me that there is so precious little known about Islam, about the side that gave men a sense of direction when they had none, and taught them to gaze at stars when the world itself was imperfectly known. Indeed there is so little of these in our mainstream, that talking about them is to talk not of history but of myths and fables. One has to labour against manifest disbelief and very often the labour is lost.
Listening to Obama’s speech in Cairo, after the spontaneous urge to applaud his assalam alailum had passed, the thing that moved me most was his acknowledgement of the great contributions to civilizations that Islam had made. To talk of compass, and algebra is to repeat the truisms of history, and yet these truisms bear repeating.
It is the first step in fighting negative stereotypes of Islam, which have so rankled with the Muslim world. Obama’s promise, that he would fight it wherever and whenever they appear, is heartening, as quite a lot of it comes from America itself. This should go a long way towards curbing the kind of gratuitous provocations (like the Danish cartoons) that had become fashionable in the aftermath of 9/11.
More than that, his speech was an acceptance of the cultural differences between Muslims and non Muslims. They would do certain things differently, look different, wear different clothes, and take their oath on the Quran rather than the Bible, and it was not just alright, but a matter of pride for America as it was a celebration of its cultural diversity and tolerance.
His comments on granting the Muslim women their right to wear the hijab (he pronounced it hajib, but no matter) would have an impact on Muslim women seeking to embrace modernity while remaining within the boundaries of their religion all over the world.
For decades popular culture had tended to see such women as prisoners of a regressive culture, the hijab itself has been portrayed as a symbol of suppression. Governments around the world have granted Muslim women the right to wear hijab uneasily, or have denied it altogether.
Obama’s comments should go some distance furthering their cause in countries as culturally diverse as France and Turkey.
Resolving conflicts
Apart from speaking on these larger issues which cannot be confined to a set timeframe, nor to any geographical locality, he spoke forcefully and candidly (quoting the Quran: “Be conscious of God, and speak the truth", and so, he said he would speak the truth) on some of the most grating points in US-Muslim relations, Iraq , Israel-Palestine conflict, Bosnia, the threat of militants in ‘a stretch of mountains,’ and Iran and its nuclear ambitions.
Quite a lot of it would have been music to Arab ears. In each of these theatres Obama made a decisive break, if not with policies – we are still to wait and watch how that pans out - with the rhetoric of his predecessor.
He said he was against Israeli settlements on Palestinian lands, and that the condition of Palestinians was "intolerable".
He said the US pursued no claim on the land or resources on Iraq; and sought no permanent military bases, neither in Afghanistan or Iraq. He even spelt out a timeframe for the withdrawal of combat troops and for the total withdrawal of US forces from Iraq (2012).
The tone he took towards Hamas was remarkably softer than that chosen by the Bush administration (in fact Bush’s speechwriter called it a major policy shift on Fox News which, by the way, was busy blasting the speech) and on Iran he put the no-nukes-for-Iran, in the larger context of no-nukes-for-the-world, and spelt out a vision where even the US would function sans its N arsenal.
All these efforts at a tight balancing act did not go unnoticed.
It would take away one of the main arguments against American approach in the Middle East that it follows double standards, that while it pats Israel on the back for its repeated incursions, military raids, and bombing campaigns against neighboring Arab states, it cries holy murder the moment Hamas fires rockets across the high wall Israel has built.
That while it expertly twiddles its thumbs when the Palestinians are blockaded into poverty and deprivation, it sets its entire diplomatic machinery in motion to condemn Hizbollah and Iran if some of Israel’s soldiers are killed or captured.
How far would his efforts go towards changing perceptions. And making a "new beginning?"
Well, that's a billion dollar question. On the one hand the speech would certainly improve the sentiment on the street, 'improve' being the operative word here, as opposed to 'change.' The principle players on the other hand (Iran, Israel, Hamas, Palestinian authority) would see in his speech the beginnings of a new approach, but would wait cautiously before actually modifying their positions. In fact that is exactly what they have done.
Israel ‘welcomed’ Obama’s speech, without referring to his settlement comments. Iran too welcomed the speech, but it too said nothing of his comments on nukes.
Palestinian Authority welcomed the two state solution but left out everything else. It is obvious that each cherry picked from the speech according to their convenience.
Another issue, that America should not be reduced to the stereotype of a hegemonic power, would only be resolved once America demonstrates in its deeds that it does not intend to behave like one. The impression has formed over long decades, when America relentlessly pursued imperialistic goals, changing regimes that were not conducive to its economic interests, supporting one side in a war, and then supporting the other depending which way its interest lay.
No single speech can wipe out that impression. The speech is a beginning, and unless it is followed by actions it would not bring about the desired change. That said, America remains popular, not just in Arab countries but in south Asian ones too, as a destination of opportunity. This sentiment may have been overwhelmed by the war on terror, but it is there. And in this America has an ally in its efforts to improve its image.
I hope – and one can but hope – that Muslims buy into the vision – as I did – of a world undivided by conflicts, free of nukes, and with equal rights and opportunity for everyone. Cynicism is like a self fulfilling prophecy, believe that an idea cannot succeed, and you damn its chances of success.
A vista of opportunity?
It would be naive to read in Obama’s speech a radical shift in its core policies, vis a vis, Israel or Iran. He is not about to start having dinner dates with Ahmadinejad, nor is he going to rattle America’s ballistic missiles at Israel and say, give up your nukes or else...
No, this is not happening. Broadly his policy objectives would remain the same as that of his predecessor. But his shift, in tone and tenor, is enough to give a chance to those who would want to come out of the barricades of their old positions.
It has long been said that even Hamas sees that Israel is going to remain in the midst of Arab states, and that it must work to move away from its position of denial of that fact. In fact the signals coming out of Hamas, right after it won the Palestinian elections, indicated that it was prepared to live with Israel as its neighbour.
It was America’s and Israel’s decision to deny the fruits of that election to Hamas, by blockading and then splitting Palestine, that made Hamas retreat back to its old rhetoric.
(On the way by the bye, America demonstrated that elections matter as long as they give the results America wants. If democracy gives results contrary to America’s interests, then too hell with the ballot, and out with the guns and bullets.)
That position now needs to be resurrected, as Obama said, “Israel is not going to go away.” To believe otherwise is wishful, and dangerous thinking. Indian Americans have engineered a fast, ultra-broadband, low-power radio chip mimicking the inner ear, or cochlea, one that could enable wireless devices to receive cell phone, Internet, radio and TV signals.
Rahul Sarpeshkar, MIT associate professor of electrical engineering and his graduate student, Soumyajit Mandal, designed the chip. The chip is faster than any human-designed radio-frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer and also operates at a lower power.
Mandal graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in June 2002. He completed his MSc in 2004 at MIT and is currently working on his PhD.
"The cochlea quickly gets the big picture of what's going on in the sound spectrum," said Sarpeshkar. "The more I started to look at the ear, the more I realized it's like a super-radio with 3,500 parallel channels."
They have also filed for a patent to incorporate the RF cochlea in a universal or software radio architecture that is designed to efficiently process a broad spectrum of signals including cellular phones, wireless Internet, FM, and other signals.
The RF cochlea mimics the structure and function of the biological cochlea, which uses fluid mechanics, piezo-electrics and neural signal processing to convert sound waves into electrical signals that are sent to the brain.
The RF or radio frequency cochlea can perceive a 100-fold range of frequencies -- in humans, from 100 to 10,000 Hz.
Sarpeshkar used the same design principles in his cochlea to create a device that can perceive signals at million-fold higher frequencies, which includes radio signals for most commercial wireless applications.
The device demonstrates what can happen when researchers take inspiration from fields outside their own, says Sarpeshkar, according to a MIT release.
Their research is slated for publication in the forthcoming edition of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits.

Scientists in America have created a new memory storage medium that can pack thousands of times more data into one square inch of space than conventional chips, and preserve this data for more than a billion years.
The breakthrough stems from the joint efforts of researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley.
“We’ve developed a new mechanism for digital memory storage that consists of a crystalline iron nanoparticle shuttle enclosed within the hollow of a multiwalled carbon nanotube,” said Alex Zettl, the physicist who led this research.
“Through this combination of nanomaterials and interactions, we’ve created a memory device that features both ultra-high density and ultra-long lifetimes, and that can be written to and read from using the conventional voltages already available in digital electronics,” the researcher added.
This advancement attains significance considering that the ever-growing demand for digital storage of videos, images, music and text calls for storage media that pack increasingly more data onto chips that keep shrinking in size.
“Furthermore, as the system is naturally hermetically sealed, it provides its own protection against environmental contamination,” Zettl said.
Her reckons that the low voltage electrical write/read capabilities of the memory element in this electromechanical device facilitates large-scale integration, and should make for easy incorporation into today’s silicon processing systems.
He believes that the technology could be on the market within the next two years, and its impact should be significant.
“Although truly archival storage is a global property of an entire memory system, the first requirement is that the underlying mechanism of information storage for individual bits must exhibit a persistence time much longer than the envisioned lifetime of the resulting device. A single bit lifetime in excess of a billion years demonstrates that our system has the potential to store information reliably for any practical desired archival time scale,” he said.
“We believe our nanoscale electromechanical memory system presents a new solution to the challenge of ultra-high density archival data storage,” he added.
