Amitabh Bacchhan rejects honorary doctorate Offered by Australian University

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has reacted to racial attacks on Indian students in Australia by rejecting an honorary doctorate offered to him by an Australian university.
The Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane had offered the 66-year-old veteran a doctorate for his contribution to the world of entertainment and Bachchan had earlier accepted the title.
The honour was to be conferred on the star in July as a part of celebrations to commemorate a retrospective of his films to be inaugurated in the city.
"I have been witnessing with great dismay and shock, the recent violent attacks on Indian students in Australia, on the electronic media the entire day," Bachchan wrote on his blog.
"I mean no disrespect to the Institution that honours me, but under the present circumstances, where citizens of my own country are subjected to such acts of inhuman horror, my conscience does not permit me to accept this decoration from a country that perpetrates such indignity to my fellow countrymen," he added.
Australia has recently seen a series of attacks on Indian students, the most serious being the assault of Shravan Kumar, a 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh who is battling for life in a hospital here after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of teens in a weekend attack that also left three of his friends injured.

Yahoo is second player in the search market behind Google

Yahoo Inc CEO Carol Bartz said any deal to spin off or combine its Internet search assets will
require a partner with "boatloads of money," and her company is talking "a little bit" with
Microsoft Corp about a potential partnership.
Speaking at the 'All Things Digital' conference on Wednesday, Bartz said the company's array of
popular web products, including Yahoo mail and its home page, remain the key assets that will
return Yahoo to growth.
Since taking the CEO job, Bartz has moved swiftly to revamp the company, cutting jobs, shuttering
certain products and reorganizing the management structure. Bartz said the company would like to
hold on and even increase its roughly 20 per cent share of the US Internet search market, but it
was not necessary for Yahoo's success.
"We are positioned as a place where people come to be informed; not just informed through a
search, but informed through great content, with great editorial and great integration and a very
local feel," Bartz said at the conference taking place north of San Diego.
Yahoo is the No 2 player in the search market, behind Google Inc, which had a roughly 64 per cent
share of the US search market in April, according to comScore. Bartz, 60, took the reins at Yahoo
in January, replacing co-founder Jerry Yang in the wake of Yahoo's rejection of a $47.5 billion
acquisition bid from software giant Microsoft.
Yahoo and Microsoft have recently talked about various partnerships, possibly with Microsoft
managing Yahoo's search advertising business and Yahoo handling display ads across Microsoft's
websites, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Asked if the talks between Yahoo and Microsoft about an Internet search deal continue, Bartz
replied "a little bit." Bartz said any deal combining its search efforts with another company
would have to meet a specific set of criteria for Yahoo.
"There's two parties in all this. The other party has to have a boatload of money and the right
technology, and give us the right data and so forth. It's that simple," said Bartz. Microsoft,
the No 3 player in the US Internet search market, is expected to provide details about
improvements to its search engine at the conference on Thursday when CEO Steve Ballmer takes the
stage.
Yahoo earned $118 million in the first quarter, while its sales declined 13 per cent
year-over-year to $1.58 billion. Given the challenging economic conditions, Bartz said she
believes the company is performing strongly.
Bartz said on Wednesday that the new organizational structure, which she said makes the
management and reporting hierarchies more clear within the company, will help Yahoo infuse its
products with personalization and social media features. Yahoo is adding social networking
features such as status updates to its various properties.
Last week, CEO Ari Blalogh said the company was also interested in acquiring outside companies to
bolster its social efforts.
Yahoo is facing increased competition from social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook.
On Tuesday, Facebook, which has 200 million active users, announced it had received $200 million
in funding from a Russian Internet investment firm.
Bartz said the company's core online properties can provide an Internet experience for Web
surfers that Facebook cannot match, by providing a one-stop shop for people to read the news,
check their stock portfolio and take care of other online tasks.
And she stressed Yahoo's various online products remain some of the most popular on the Web.
Yahoo has a 76 per cent reach among U.S. Internet users, said Bartz.

INDIAN team T20 champions arrive in England to defend crown

The Indian team, arrived here on Friday night to defend their World Twenty20 title. The defending
champions were welcomed at Heathrow airport by ICC officials, media and Indian fans.
The nucleus of the team is almost the same which won the inaugural T20 World Cup. India is
scheduled to play two practice games against New Zealand and arch-rivals Pakistan before heading
to Nottingham for their league games.
"2007 was of great importance for me. I played the final and we won the World Twenty20. Now we
have come back two years later to defend our title. If we had been playing Tests and Twenty20, we
would have had to adjust but we have been playing Twenty20, so we have the momentum which will
really help us," Yusuf Pathan told CNN-IBN.

First Time Air Bus Factory in INDIA

Weeks before the first China-built Airbus rolls off the assembly line near Beijing, the European
planemaker's top official has pulled out the map and targeted future jetliner production in the
United States and India.
Airbus Chief Executive Tom Enders, writing 40 years after the birth of the first plane project by
a four-nation European consortium, said Airbus must become global to stay competitive. "We have
to leave national sentiment behind us," Enders wrote in a column in Friday's edition of the
Financial Times.
"Airbus will only remain competitive in the long term if it develops resources and markets
globally and becomes a genuinely international company, with development and production also in
the US, China, India and elsewhere."
Airbus agreed in 2006 to set up an assembly line for the A320 family of jets, its most popular
model, at Tianjin in China to reduce costs and gain an edge over rival Boeing in one of the
world's largest aviation markets.
The first plane will be delivered by end-June, the first time an Airbus has been assembled
outside its two main host countries, France and Germany, supported by Britain and Spain. India
has pressed Airbus to consider opening a production line there also, but so far the European
company has been tied up in domestic restructuring and a series of aircraft production delays, as
well as fierce union opposition to offshoring jobs.
When India's civil aviation minister floated the idea of an Indian assembly line at an Airbus
ceremony at the Paris air show two years ago, Airbus officials cautiously welcomed the concept
but said the costs might outweigh the benefits. The economic crisis has since threatened
planemakers' orders.
Trade warning
In the United States, Airbus considered assembling freighters in Alabama as part of a deal to
sell mid-air refuelling tankers built from the same fuselages to the Pentagon. But the plans were
suspended when Boeing appealed against the contract.
US production is attractive to firms whose costs are in euros but whose products, like aircraft,
are priced in dollars. Unions and politicians in Europe, however, are concerned about job losses.
Writing days before European parliamentary elections, Enders said shutting trade borders was no
fix to the economic crisis.
"Next month in Tianjin we shall deliver the first Airbus made in China ... No one will benefit
more from this than Europeans." He also blamed European governments for hobbling Airbus's first
major military project, the A400M airlifter, with a wish list for customisation that only added
to production delays.
The four-year setback has usually been blamed on engine problems. "Too often there has been a
reversion to defending diverse national requirements that offer little in terms of performance
but impact significantly on cost and deliverability," he said.
"That certainly has been the case with the A400M, and we have asked the European partners in the
programme for a greater degree of realism in order to enable delivery of the aircraft we all want
at a sensible price." Parent EADS is trying to negotiate contract changes to rescue the 20
billion euro project by an end-June dead

Economy slowdown in the first Quarter in INDIA

India's economic slowdown unexpectedly eased in the first quarter as expansion in construction,
financial services and agriculture offset a slide in manufacturing, according to government
figures on Friday.
Asia's third-biggest economy grew 5.8 per cent from a year earlier in the first three months of
2009, the same rate as the previous quarter, and much better than many economists had expected.
Growth for the fiscal year ended March slowed to 6.7 per cent from 9 per cent the previous year —
its slowest rate since the 2003 fiscal year — but markets cheered the better-than-expected
quarterly figure.
The benchmark Sensex index rose 2.2 per cent, or 315.58 points, to 14611.59 in midday trade.
India's new government says kickstarting the economy — hard hit by the global recession — is its
top priority. It plans to implement economic reforms and continue with stimulus spending.
Finance, construction, and agriculture all grew at a faster rate during the quarter, while
manufacturing contracted.
"That was a bit counter-intuitive because of the global financial turmoil," said Sherman Chan, an
economist at Moody's Economy.com in Sydney.
She attributed financial services sector resilience to India's robust domestic economy and
relatively insulated economy.
National elections, which concluded this month, may also have spurred economic activity, she
said.
Finance, insurance and real estate expanded by 9.5 per cent in the January-March quarter, faster
than the 8.3 per cent growth clocked in the previous quarter.
Construction also overcame its doldrums, with quarterly growth rising to 6.8 per cent from 4.2
per cent.
Agriculture, India's largest source of employment, grew 2.7 per cent from a year earlier,
reversing a 0.8 per cent contraction in the October-December quarter.
Manufacturing continued to slide. It shrank by 1.4 per cent, down from 0.9 per cent growth the
prior quarter.
For the fiscal year ended March, government spending and investment underpinned growth.
Government expenditure rose to 11.1 per cent of gross domestic product for the year ended March,
up from 9.8 per cent the prior year.
Private consumption shrank to 55.5 per cent of GDP, from 57.2 per cent, and gross fixed capital
formation — a measure of investment — rose to 32.2 per cent from 31.6 per cent.
Chan said that government spending is not sustainable and that ultimately private consumption and
investment will have to lead growth.
Government debt stands at 80 per cent of GDP — a level that worries investors, she said.
"I'm expecting government spending to be scaled back significantly once the global turmoil is
over," she said. "The fiscal position is weak."

largest solar telescope in the world

The world’s largest solar telescope, which can capture the Sun’s magnetic field better than other
telescopes, is now operational.
The new 1.6-meter clear aperture solar telescope, the largest of its kind in the world, is
housed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey, US.
“We are already seeing images offering a better understanding of the Sun,” said NJIT
Distinguished Professor of Physics Philip R. Goode.
“With this instrument, we should be able to have a better understanding of dynamic storms and
space weather, which can have dramatic effects on Earth,” he added.
Earlier this month, researchers achieved what is called first scientific light.
This means the telescope is operational. To achieve its full powers, at least three more years of
work will be needed to bring on-line ever-more sophisticated hardware for observing the Sun.
Nevertheless, Goode and the BBSO (Big Bear Solar Observatory) research team were able to extract
a few unique images and one is shown.
The photos clearly illustrate the before-and-after capabilities of the old versus new telescope.
“Our prized first image shows the Sun’s ever-present, turbulent granular field with its largest
granules being about the size of Alaska,” Goode said.
“The small, bright points in the dark lanes are less than 50 miles across and are the
smallest-scale magnetic structures on the Sun,” he added.
According to Goode, if one looks closely at the “after” photo, you will see a string of pearls.
“Each pearl is a cross-section of an intense, single fiber of the Sun’s magnetic field – the
basic building block of the solar magnetism,” he said.
Goode added that the Sun is now in a state of prolonged magnetic inactivity, perhaps the longest
such time in a century.
“The new telescope is ideal for studying the Sun as it rises from this strange state of
quietude,” he said.
The new instrument has three times the aperture of the old telescope.
It represents a significant advance in high-resolution observations of the Sun, since it has the
largest aperture of any solar telescope in existence, said Goode.
The new telescope will be used in joint observation campaigns with NASA satellites to optimize
the scientific output of all observations of the Sun.

French Open: Sharapova, Nadal advance; Safin loses

On a day of adieus at the French Open, Maria Sharapova managed to stick around.
Trailing through most of the third set in her toughest test since shoulder surgery, Sharapova
pulled out a 6-2, 1-6, 8-6 victory over 11th-seeded Nadia Petrova on Wednesday to reach the third
round at Roland Garros, her return to Grand Slam tennis.
"I kind of started stumbling away. Things went in the wrong direction," said Sharapova, who
missed the US Open and Australian Open. "I was just glad I could pick myself up and keep
fighting."
That she did: Five times, Petrova was one point away from serving for the match. But Sharapova
didn't allow her to convert those chances.
"She really showed, even though she has been out for a while, she's willing to compete till the
end," Petrova acknowledged.
Sharapova's French Open continues, as does Rafael Nadal's winning streak at Roland Garros — which
he extended to a tournament-record 30 matches — but there will be no more trips to the clay-court
major for Marat Safin or Fabrice Santoro.
Both are retiring at season's end, and both bowed out Wednesday, albeit in quite contrasting
ways, which is fitting, given their polar-opposite styles of play and personalities.
The big-hitting, loud-talking Safin succumbed after a 4½-hour, five-set bit of theater; the
spin-mixing, gentlemanly Santoro played all of eight minutes to conclude his loss to Christophe
Rochus in a match suspended the night before by darkness.
"My game style was out of date when I arrived on the tour. I got on the tour in the '90s, and my
style dated back to the '70s," said Santoro, who tied a French Open record by playing in his 20th
French Open. "So when I arrived, I was, you know, 20 years late already."
Safin, meanwhile, entertained as only he can, diving for shots, kicking at the clay in disgust,
and gesturing at fans to make even more noise when they got on his case for arguing calls.
The two-time major title winner eventually was beaten by 134th-ranked Josselin Ouanna of France
7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 3-6, 10-8.
"I played terrible," the 20th-seeded Safin said.
He was done as dusk fell, around the time Venus Williams lost the first set of her match against
Lucie Safarova. They were told to pack up, because there wasn't enough light

Sania crashes out of French Open singles

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza crashed out of French Open women's singles event after losing in
straight sets to Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva on Tuesday.
Sania went down 4-6 6-7 (3) in a contest lasting a little over an hour-and-a-half.
Sania, who has never gone beyond the second round at Roland Garros, had little match practice
going into the clay court event.
The Indian's rustiness was quite evident in the six double faults she committed in the very first
set. Sania's failure to convert any of the four break points that she earned only added to her
problems.
Voskoboeva converted a crucial break in the seventh game to clinch the first set in 46 minutes.
Sania put up a slightly better show in the second set and cut down on her double faults but 14
unforced errors pulled her back.
After losing her serve twice, Sania broke back to take the set into a tie-breaker. But
Voskoboeva, who had lost to Sania in their only past encounter, dominated the proceedings
thereafter and clinched the tie-breaker 7-3.
Sania is still in fray in the doubles event where she has teamed up with Taipei's Chia-Jung
Chuang.
Sania and Chuang, seeded 14th, will open their campaign against Turk-Belgian pair of Ipek Senoglu
and Yanina Wickmayer.

Slumdog kid's father slams Boyle, asks for a house

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle, who rushed to India on Wednesday to help the film's
child stars, was stunned when a child's father accused him of ignoring them.
Some of the children have become homeless after civic authorities razed their shanties. Boyle had
come down to offer them help.
However, Rafiq Qureshi, father of Rubina Ali, 9, left their meeting in anger accusing the
filmmaker of neglecting them after the film's global success.
"A house is being provided for the kids...we have been listening this for the last five
months...I don't see any house coming our way. The shanty that we were living in has already been
razed...where are we getting a house from?
"If they are providing us a house, when are they going to do it? Our kids are literally living on
the road now," an exasperated Qureshi told a news channel later.
Slumdog producer Christian Colson also participated in the meeting held at the Tata Institute of
Social Sciences on the outskirts of the city.
"We are looking for a legal accommodation that should be held by the trust (Jai Ho) to ensure the
safety of these kids and it would be properly monitored as well," a calm Boyle told the
reporters.
The kids including Azharuddin Ismail M Shaikh, 10, the main child star of the movie, apart from
Rubina, were both thrown on the streets after Mumbai civic authorities demolished their shanties
on May 14, terming the slum unauthorised.
The producers of the multiple Oscar-award wining underdog drama had earlier announced a setting
up Jai Ho Trust to look after the two child stars and ensure that they receive quality education
and a house to live in.

Zune portable media player launch by microsoft

Microsoft Corp plans to launch a new version of its Zune portable media player later this year in
the United States, incorporating high-definition video, touch screen technology and Wi-Fi
connection.
Microsoft said on Tuesday the new Zune, its answer to Apple Inc's popular iPod digital music
player, will also come with an Internet browser and a built-in HD radio receiver that offers
higher-quality sound than traditional radio. It did not give a price or a specific date except to
say it was due in the fall.
The company added new features to Zune's music service last year, enabling users to download
music wirelessly and buy songs they hear on the device's built-in FM radio.

Tendulkar confident about India’s chances in T20 WC

Star Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar reckons that India have enough fire power to retain the
Twenty20 World Cup that begins next month in England.
Terming the Indian pace bowling attack as amongst the best in the world, Sachin said: "It is on
par with the best. Zaheer, Ishant and RP Singh form a lethal combination, particularly in English
conditions. Our seam attack has a lot of variety and would come handy in such conditions. On our
day, we can demolish any batting side."
Tendulkar reemphasised the need of adequate rest for the players after a gruelling IPL season.
The master batsman, however, said that there was no need to worry about Virender Sehwag’s poor
run of form.
"Every player has ups and downs in his career and Viru is no exception. But an on-song Viru is a
delight to watch. If he gets one cover drive right, he`ll mesmerise everybody and will again be
back to his best. The bowlers will be at his mercy then. He is a superb striker of the ball ...
on his day, he can do anything," Tendulkar told a newspaper.
"We come as a package. I am certain this package is the best in business at the moment. This
package has everything which is necessary to make us world champions once again. India is the
most balanced side in the world and there is no doubt we can defend the title. We have very good
cricketers in our side and we have proved that this combination is the deadliest," he added.

Tamil Tiger chief Prabhakaran's parents in govt custody

The parents of the now dead Tamil Tigers chief Velupillai Prabhakaran are in the "protective
custody" of the Sri Lankan government, a media report said Thursday.

Thiruvenkatam Velupillai (76) and his wife Parvathi (71) surrendered to the army several days
ago, The Island newspaper quoted a government official as saying.
They were reportedly among the civilians holed up in the no fire zone along the coast in
Mullaitivu district before the army launched its final assault against the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Prabhakaran and other LTTE leaders were killed May 18.
"Velupillai and Parvathi were among the early batch of Sri Lankan Tamils to go to India. They
settled in Tiruchi," the report said.
They returned to the LTTE zone in northern Sri Lanka in 2003, a year after the Tigers and Colombo
signed a Norway-brokered ceasefire agreement. Prabhakaran had fled their home in Jaffna way back
in 1972.
Prabhakaran's death and the decimation of the LTTE ended a dragging Tamil separatist conflict
that left some 90,000 people dead in Sri Lanka

Afghanistan to get its first cricket board

Afghanistan cricket took another step towards establishing itself Wednesday when President Hamid
Karzai gave the go-ahead for creation of the country`s first-ever national cricket board.
The president announced the step during a meeting with the team, which has been elevated to the
international arena since the 2001 removal of the Taliban regime, a statement from his office
said.
Afghanistan received ODI status for the first time earlier this year when the war-torn country
finished in the top six of the 2011 World Cup qualifying event.
They will also attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Twenty20 championships in October.
It underscores a meteoric rise for a sport that only started building here in recent years, as
thousands of refugees from years of crushing war started returning from exile in cricket-mad
Pakistan after the Taliban was ousted.
The cricketers had previously fallen under the country`s government-funded National Olympic
Committee which regulates and manages all major sports in the country.
The cricket team had long called for its own structure and frequently complains about its lack of
budget and facilities which fall way behind those of other cricketing nations.
"This is breaking news for the sportsmen of Afghanistan," the team`s secretary general Taj Malook
said.
"We will get our own budget and attract the international and government support we need," he
said. "This has been much needed."
Karzai will be the patron-in-chief of the new board, which is expected to be set up in the next
days, Malook said.

US all set for its own Twenty20 cricket League

With the successful completion of the second Indian Premier League in South Africa, stage is now
all set for the American Premier League (APL), and the organisers claim that the APL would
revolutionise cricket in the country of Baseball.
Six teams -- Premium Americans, Premium Bangladeshis, Premium World, Premium Indians, Premium
Paks and Premium Windies -- would vie for the first APL trophy, the inaugural match of which is
scheduled for October 6 at the Home of the Staten Island Yankees and the finals on October 23 and
24.
"Everything is going on schedule. The APL promises to change the face of cricket in the US," Jay
Mir, president of the American Sports and Entertainment Group -- the organisers of the APL --
told reporters.
The first edition of the Twenty20 tournament has attracted quite significant sponsorship bids,
which Mir said is being finalised and would be announced soon.
Given the large population from the South Asian countries -- India, Pakistan and Bangladesh --
and those from the Caribbean`s residing in the US, organisers are expecting a huge turnout during
the cricketing extravaganza to be held in New York and New Jersey.
A large number of international cricketers have already signed up for the tournament, but the
names of Indian players have been kept under wraps.

Fifty govt websites to be made disabled friendly

Disabled rights groups have approached the IT ministry with a list of 50 government websites like
that of the Indian Railways, Central Information Commission and Income Tax Department which they
want to be made disabled friendly.
"We have identified 50 organisations and departments in the government. We have sent a proposal
to the IT ministry to make sites of these WCAG (web content accessibility guidelines) 2.0
compliant, thereby making them disabled friendly. The ministry has shown a very positive outlook
on this," Javed Abidi, convener of the Disabled Rights Group, said.
According to Abidi, such a move would simplify the Internet interface for people with disability
by making the websites compatible with the special software they use to access websites.
"With an aim to enable disabled people to be a part of e-governance, we came to a consensus on
the list after discussions with various disability groups across the country. Simple things like
booking a rail ticket will be possible for people with visual impairment once the site carries
out technical changes," he said.
Abidi, who is also director of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled
People (NCPEDP) - an umbrella organisation of various NGOs and civil society organisations
working on disability issues - said that 99.99 percent of the estimated 5,000 websites and web
portals hosted by the government of India listed by the National Information Centre (NIC) can't
be accessed by people with disability.
At the e-governance conference in Goa February 12, it was announced that all government websites
would be made WCAG 2.0 compliant.
These government websites would now enable web access to a wider range of people with
disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning
disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities and photosensitivity.
The challenge, Abidi said, was to make existing sites WCAG 2.0 compliant and sensitise concerned
government departments.
"While the IT ministry initiated immediate action and made India's largest sites - india.gov.in
and bharat.gov.in - accessible to the disabled, the social justice and empowerment ministry
continues to drag its feet. It is ironic that it is this ministry that is supposedly nodal for
various issues concerning disabled people," he said.
Abidi added the website of the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) was not
accessible to visually impaired people.
"Similarly, the CCPD (Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities) website is still not
accessible to people with disabilities. And they are supposedly the watchdogs for any Disability
Act violations that may occur," he said.

vehicles that drive on their own

Ever imagined reading a book or watching a movie in your car, while your vehicle guides itself
through the traffic and navigates on its own? Well, thanks to a new technology called
''autonomous vehicle navigation'', this could soon be a reality.
If this technology comes into action, it may also see fleets of self-navigating vehicles for the
military operating in war zones.
Keeping this in mind, a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contest was conducted,
which aimed at spurring the development of such technologies.
The DARPA Urban Challenge was held at a former air force base in Victorville, Calif. in late
2007, and offered a 3.5 million dollars purse to competitors who could design the fastest and
safest vehicles that could traverse a 60-mile urban course in moving traffic in less than six
hours.
The contestant vehicles were unmanned and had to complete a simulated military supply mission,
manoeuvring through a mock city environment, avoiding obstacles, merging into moving traffic,
navigating traffic circles, and negotiating intersections -- all while conforming to California
driving rules.
And out of the 89 international teams participating in the contest, only six could make it to the
finish line in the allotted time.
The winning vehicle, which finished with the fastest time- an average speed of approximately 13
miles per hour- had Wende Zhang of General Motors as part of its design team.
The GM team incorporated existing technology already offered in some of their vehicles that can
assist in parking or detect lane markers and trigger alarms if the drivers are coming too close
to the shoulder of the road.
And for the DARPA challenge, they developed a more sophisticated package of sensors that included
GPS coupled with a camera and a laser-ranging LIDAR system to guide and correct the vehicle''s

Facebook has received a USD 200 million investment from Digital Sky Technologies

Social networking site Facebook has received a USD 200 million investment from Digital Sky
Technologies, an internet investment group, in exchange for a 1.96 per cent stake in the company.
Digital Sky Technologies (DST), which has significant stake in Eastern European and Russian
internet businesses, has picked up 1.96 per cent in Facebook, valuing the enterprise at USD 10
billion, the company said in a statement.
In addition, DST has indicated plans for an offer to buy at least USD 100 million of Facebook
shares from existing shareholders to facilitate liquidity for current and former employees'
vested shares in the company.
However, consistent with Facebook's practice with other recent investors, DST would not be
represented on the Facebook board or hold special observer rights, the statement added.
"This investment demonstrates Facebook's ongoing success at creating a global network for people
to share and connect," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.
"A number of firms approached us, but DST stood out because of the global perspective they
bring-– backed up by the impressive growth and financial achievements of their internet
investments," Zuckerberg added.
DST's main assets account for over 70 per cent of all page views in Russian-speaking internet and
its social networks are market leaders in more than 13 countries

Priyanka's white Mercedes with Shahid's car following behind.

It seems the lovebirds are not hiding their blossoming relationship anymore. Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor were spotted leaving Kareem Morani's birthay bash together in Priyanka's white Mercedes with Shahid's car following behind.
Says a guest at the party, "Priyanka walked in with a friend a bit after midnight while Shahid came in after 1 am. But during the entire time Priyanka was there, Shahid kept calling and talking to her throughout till he reached."
Once the lover boy reached, the couple withdrew to a secluded corner where they remained, talking in hushed tones, almost till the time they had to leave around 5 am.
While Priyanka is quite happy to show the world that she's in love with Shahid, apparently, he's not in a hurry to do it. He was hiding his face when the photogs were trying to take pictures."
The duo have also been spotted taking late-night walks together

IT-BPO: Is it the end of a dream run?

India's software and IT enabled services industry has had a dream run till now, capturing by 2008 a 51 per cent share of the global market for sourcing of technology and business services. But it now faces the biggest challenge of its lifetime. The world around the Indian IT-BPO industry is rapidly changing and it will have to transform itself extensively even to stay where it is.
IT-BPO exports grew at a compound annual rate of 31.6 per cent in the boom years 2004-08. But the rate fell to 16 per cent last year (2008-09) and is likely to be in single digit in the current year. While the slowdown so far is the result of the global economic crisis, the future of the industry has been plunged into uncertainty by the Obama effect which has created an openly hostile political atmosphere towards offshoring in the US, the world's biggest market for offshore vendors. So you cannot even say that it will be business as usual once recovery comes.
Nasscom, the industry body, has over the years been using the strategy consultancy McKinsey to give it a vision and roadmap, periodically updated. The first report, written when exports clocked $4 billion in 1998, laid out the target of $50 billion annual exports in a decade, by 2008. This goal seemed impossible initially but over the years became a sort of pole star, to guide and to inspire. The goal was missed marginally, exports touching $ 47 billion in 2008-09. The second goal, $60 billion in exports by 2010, is likely to be missed by 3-4 quarters. And now McKinsey has laid out a third scenario, of the shape of things to come by 2020.
The latest McKinsey report (executive summary) points out that Indian IT's business model, till now centred on delivering a one-time labour arbitrage based on an offshore centric model, is critically dependent on on-site rates being three to four times offshore rates. Till now banking, finance and insurance, telecommunications, manufacturing and retail have been among the important verticals. But in the new scenario emerging, most of the growth will come from newer verticals like energy efficiency, climate change, healthcare and mobile applications. The new geographies will be the BRIC countries and new customers, small and medium businesses and individuals who will use more and more of IT.
The addressable global market will grow from the current $500 billion to around $1.5-1.6 trillion in 2020. But 80 per cent of the incremental growth in business, $800 billion, will come from new verticals, geographies and customer segments. This will be more than the present core business which will then likely account for $700 billion. Thus in 12 years, Indian IT will have to transform itself successfully to live and survive in a substantially new business world.
Remote infrastructure management will grow and be an important part of the business, as will automation and process standardisation which will shrink the value of the current core business. This will shake the foundations of what is now bread and butter for Indian software companies' application development and maintenance. Today software services companies are in business importantly because legacy systems malfunction all the time and have to be fixed on a continuing basis. But when applications take less human effort to develop, courtesy productivity improvement via automation, and systems become less prone to breakdown because of process improvements, today's average software engineer has to contemplate what happened to yesterdays car repair mechanic.
The latest Nasscom-McKinsey report spells these changes through several scenarios. The worst case is the one in which the Obama factor constrains global demand for technology and business services as offshoring is curbed. It projects a global outsourcing industry of $275 billion in 2020, in which India accounts for $125 billion with market share going down to 45 per cent from the current (2008) figure of 51 per cent. This implies a CAGR of 10 per cent, hugely down from the 33 per cent achieved in recent years.
But assuming that this does not happen, the likely scenario is Indian exports of $175 billion, a market share of around 40 per cent and a CAGR of 13 per cent. Implicit in this is a loss of competitiveness through inability to fill the emerging skills gap, among other things, with countries like China, the Philippines and Eastern Europe becoming the new challengers. But if India does retain its competitiveness at present levels then, according to the third scenario, exports are likely to be $225 billion, implying a global market share of 50 per cent (same as now) and a CAGR of 15.5 per cent. And the best possible scenario is one in which India innovates to acquire new capabilities, thus becoming more competitive than now, and achieves exports of $310 billion, implying a market share of around 57 per cent and a CAGR of 18.6 per cent (still way below the last peak).
Though such specific figures can and do go awry, they provide a framework for the various players and stakeholders to anchor individual business plans and agendas for action. A lot can be done to remain fighting fit and going by the record of the industry, a lot will be done. With the level of enterprise and innovative spirit embedded in the industry, there is a fighting chance that, having come this far, it will be able to transform itself the right way. A subsequent column will look at the agenda for action outlined by the Nasscom-McKinsey report.

'Tony Blair believed God wanted him to go to war in Iraq'

Former British premier Tony Blair was so influenced by religion that he believed God wanted him to go to war in Iraq and Kosovo to fight evil, when he was in office, his mentor has claimed. According to John Burton, one of Blair's closest political aides, the former British leader viewed his decision to go to war in Iraq and Kosovo as part of "Christian battle" against "evil". He claimed that Blair was driven by the belief that "good should triumph over evil" and his faith had given him an unshakeable conviction that he was right, leading newspaper 'The Daily Telegraph' reported. "It's very simple to explain the idea of Blair the Warrior. It was part of Tony living out his faith. While he was at Number 10, Tony was virtually gagged on the whole question of religion. But Tony's Christian faith is part of him, down to his cotton socks.” "He believed strongly at the time, that intervention in Kosovo, Sierra Leone -- Iraq too -- was all part of the Christian battle; good should triumph over evil, making lives better," Burton wrote in his upcoming book 'We Don't Do God'. Burton, who was Blair's political agent in Sedgefield constituency for 24 years, has said that his religion gave him a "total belief in what's right and what's wrong", leading him to see the so-called War on Terror as "a moral cause". "I truly believe that his Christianity affected his policy-making on just about everything from aid to Africa, education, poverty, world debt and intervening in other countries when he thought it was right to do it.” "The fervour was part of him and it comes back to it being Christian fervour that spurred him into action for better or worse.” "He applied that same principle in everything he did, from establishing the Social Exclusion Unit to ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, and ridding Iraq of the evils of Saddam Hussein's rule," he was quoted as saying.

Iran producing anti-cruise missile cannons

Iran launched on Sunday a production line for manufacturing cannons for warships which can be used against cruise missiles, the Fars news agency reported. "The final range of the 40-millimetre naval cannon, named Fath (victory), is 12 kilometres and it shoots 300 projectiles per minute," Defence Minister Mohammad Mostafa Najjar said in a statement reported by Fars. "It can be used against cruise missiles. It is an anti-aircraft low-altitude weapon for use on warships," he said, adding that it was being entirely built by Iranians. Iran has boasted in the past of developing new weapons systems only for its claims to be met with scepticism by Western defence analysts. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced on Wednesday that Iran had successfully test-fired a new medium-range missile, named Sejil-2, drawing a warning from Israel that Europe too should now worry about the Islamic republic's ballistic programme.

Cell phone viruses poised to reach epidemic proportions

Unlike computer viral epidemics, no major outbreaks of mobile phone viral infection have been reported to date. Ever wondered why? Well, Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, director of the Center for Complex Network Research at Northeastern University, says that it is because a highly fragmented market share has effectively hindered outbreaks thus far. He warns that cell phone viruses will pose a serious threat once a single mobile operating system's market share grows sufficiently large, and that that may not be far off considering the 150 percent annual growth rate of smart phones. "We haven't had a problem so far because only phones with operating systems, so-called ''smart phones'', are susceptible to viral infection," said Marta Gonzalez, one of the authors of a study report published in the journal Science. "Once a single operating system becomes common, we could potentially see outbreaks of epidemic proportion because a mobile phone virus can spread by two mechanisms: a Bluetooth virus can infect all Bluetooth-activated phones in a 10-30 meter radius, while Multimedia Messaging System (MMS) virus, like many computer viruses, spreads using the address book of the device. Not surprisingly, hybrid viruses, which can infect via both routes, pose the most significant danger," Gonzalez added. The experts reckon that Bluetooth viruses eventually start infecting all susceptible handsets. Given that human behavioural patterns have been restricting the spread of such infections thus far, the experts believe that there should be sufficient time to deploy countermeasures like antiviral software to prevent major Bluetooth outbreaks. Although human behavioural patterns do not restrict the spread of MMS viruses, they are still constrained because the number of susceptible devices is currently much smaller. The experts say that the unprecedented challenges will surface once people become increasingly connected. They think that studies categorized as computational social science are necessary to understand group behaviour and organization, assess potential threats, and develop solutions to the issues faced by our ever-changing society.

Australian flood waters create 'inland sea'

Thousands of homeowners remained isolated in Australia's flood-hit northeast on Sunday, where authorities said days of torrential rain had created a vast "inland sea". Swollen rivers peaked overnight, allowing clean-up operations to begin and evacuated residents to return to the northern New South Wales towns of Grafton and Kempsey, the State Emergency Service (SES) said. But SES spokesman Greg Slater said up to 20,000 people in small communities remained cut off by the floodwaters, which have led to disaster declarations in NSW and neighbouring Queensland. "We're concentrating our efforts on those communities in terms of re-supply and provision of immediate medical assistance and medical supplies, also just the basic necessities, foodstuff and the like," he told Sky News. Two people have died in the floods, which dumped one-third of southeast Queensland's average annual rainfall in just 24 hours. NSW Premier Nathan Rees flew over the affected area on Sunday and said it was difficult to grasp the extent of the floods, even from the air. "It's an inland sea, and you see the (animal) stocks that are isolated and the towns that are isolated and you wonder where it's all going to go," he told reporters. Rees appointed former police commissioner Ken Maroney to coordinate clean-up in the northern NSW region, which has been hit by three major floods since February. "This will be a large-scale recovery effort to help restore the region," he said. Clarence Valley mayor Richie Williamson said flood mitigation measures in most major towns withstood the rising waters overnight. "Things are starting to get back to normal thankfully," he said. "Last night it was touch and go as the peak arrived at Maclean. Thankfully the levee wasn't overtopped there. Things are also okay in Yamba as well, albeit very, very wet." Floods unleashed by cyclonic rains in February saw much of Queensland declared a disaster area, with more than one million square kilometres (385,000 square miles) deluged and 3,000 homes damaged. Further floods hammered the region last month, washing a number of motorists to their death and claiming the life of a 12-year-old girl who was swimming in a swollen weir. The floods follow a once-in-a-century heatwave in southeastern Australia, in which more than 2,000 homes were razed by major wildfires and 173 people died. Meteorologists have warned the extreme temperatures and downpours -- a common feature of Australian summers -- would only increase as a result of climate change.

YouTube infested with hundreds of porn videos

Video-sharing website YouTube has come under attack with hundreds of pornographic videos being uploaded onto its site. The sexually explicit videos and inappropriate material were uploaded under the names of famous teenage celebrities like Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers. Many of the videos uploaded first started with footage of children's videos, and then continued on to adults performing graphic sex acts. In one video titled ''Jonas Brother Live On Stage'', a user posted a comment saying: "I'm 12 years old and what is this?" Under other uploaded videos, online users posted comments such as: "Take the tags off, you''ll get us caught." Another said: "Your gonna kill us all!" The raid on the website has shown how easy it is to upload porn onto a site, which is viewed by millions of people on a daily basis. And as the videos were being uploaded, many viewers added them to their favourites and rated them highly. One of the users believed to have uploaded the pornographic material videos was 21-year-old Flonty from Germany. "I did it because YouTube keeps deleting music. It was part of a 4Chan raid," the BBC quoted him as saying. 4Chan is a bulletin board focusing on Japanese manga and anime, but some of its more extreme sections have been described on online message boards as "sick" and "horrifying stuff". "Anything and everything can, and usually does, happen here. We have our very own unique culture, and there is no group quite like us anywhere out there," he said. Flonty was asked if he was concerned that children could freely watch such inappropriate material on YouTube.

World’s first battery that charges on air

The world’s first battery fuelled by air, which could provide up to 10 times the energy storage of designs currently available and could power electric cars, mobile phones and laptops, has been unveiled.
Scientists say the revolutionary ‘STAIR’ (St Andrews Air) battery is charged in a traditional way but as power is used or ‘discharged’, an open mesh section of the battery draws in oxygen from the surrounding air.

Next-gen DVD that can hold 2,000 movies unveiled

A new type of disc that stores 10,000 times more data than current DVDs has been unveiled by Australia researchers.
The revolutionary disc could be on the market within a decade, researchers reported in the journal Nature.
The discs store 1.6 terabytes of data, pipping the capacity of current DVD and Blu-ray discs which hold up to 50 gigabytes.
A standard DVD recorder uses light of a single wavelength to ''burn'' data onto the surface of the disc, reports ABC Online.
Researchers from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne found that by adding gold nanorods to the disc they were able to increase its capacity.
The nanorods react to light according to their shape – thus allowing researchers to record information using light of different wavelengths, or colours, on the same location on the disc.
The researchers also used polarisation, the angle of the light''s electric field, to record data.
"The polarisation can be rotated 360 degrees," says paper co-author Dr James Chon.
"So for example, we were able to record at zero degree polarisation. Then on top of that, we were able to record another layer of information at 90 degrees polarisation, without them interfering with each other," he added.
Professor Min Gu, Director of the Centre for Micro-Photonics at Swinburne, who was also involved in the research, said: "We have created a new recording device that can respond to different colour and different polarisation. By using these properties we can use more of the disc."
In their paper, the researchers were able to record three layers of information, using three different wavelengths and two polarisations.
Since publication, the authors have recorded 10 layers, and they believe it is possible to record 100 layers onto a single disc.

How Did a 15 Years Old Girl Generate Thousand of Dollars From A Website?

What do you think about that story? For some of you, that paragraphs I quote from anguilla-beaches.com may be not so interesting. But when I finish my story, I can sure that the only think you want to do is to visit the site!
Why? Because that site was built by a 15 years old girl, and successfully generated thousand of dollars. How awesome!
This inspiring story began in August 2002, when Nori and her father, Ken Evoy, made a trip to the beautiful Carribean island of Anguilla. It was actually their second trip there.Nori liked the place very much, and all of her adventures there brought her an idea of building a web site.
I took the whole story she shared, so you won’t miss anything.
Who Would Have Thought That A Vacation Could Pay My Way Through University?
by Nori Evoy
nori evoy - anguilla-beaches.comIn August, 2002, we made our second trip to the beautiful Caribbean island of Anguilla. Many people had never heard of it. My Dad hadn’t.
And then he read a book.
It is an inspiring story about two people selling everything they owned, “slowing down” and opening up their dream… a restaurant in Anguilla.
Their love of the island, through successes and mishaps, their description of the island and its people, caught my dad’s fancy. This book is really about a journey down a “road less traveled.”
It’s really about people choosing to lead their own lives.
I feel so sad for people who are stuck working for people they don’t like, for those who are forced to go to work, fight traffic, be in an office and then come home at the end of the day.
My dad works hard building SiteSell.com and Site Build It!. Probably too hard. But he loves what he does — I can see his dream, how Site Build It! can free people from a hum-drum life. You don’t have to do what the Blanchard’s did and risk every penny and open your own restaurant.
You can do what I did. But never meant to. :-) (After all, who could have imagined that A Trip to the Beach and Site Build It! would turn me into a successful Web site owner, too?)
Anyway, all that to say… when my Dad asked me to write my “case study,” how could I say “no”? (How could I say “no” anyway — but that’s a different story!).
Before I start my story, I should add one thing… I get some e-mail saying how lucky I am to have my Dad tutor me on “Net marketing.” Well, he doesn’t.
He does help me a lot with my writing — he loves to write, and he pushes me to “say it better, Nori — make it come alive.” And he did help me get started with the software. But I do all the rest myself.

Aamir Khan’s east- west flavour

Aamir Khan is going from strength to strength.
After almost all his movies did well in B-Town, he’s all set to make more headway in the west.
Chances are he might be paired opposite recent Oscar winner Kate Winslet in a film to be directed by Pan Nalin.
The story is reportedly an adaptation of legendary Pakistani playwright Saadat Hasan Manto’s short story ‘Toba Tek Singh’ which speaks about the comic situation inside an Indian mental asylum in 1947, when India and Pakistan were being created.
The buzz is that though nothing’s been confirmed yet, Aamir is already quite excited about the whole thing.
After all he’s turned on by intelligent stuff.
Pan has already narrated the script to Aamir impressing him in the process and he’s keen on the movie.
That’s how a perfectionist is supposed to behave, it seems.
But work will start only when the bigger star in the scheme of things (well, that’s how it seems) gives a nod.
Pan Nalin has kept his option open too.
If Kate opts out then he will rope in ‘The Mummy’ and ‘The Constant Gardener’ actress Rachel Weisz for playing the role of Dr Sophie.
He’s said “Either Kate or Rachel will be doing my film. I will be meeting both of them after my Cannes trip to finalise the casting. Either of them will be able to do justice to this marvelous story.”
If all goes well, Aamir perfection would literally cross the seven seas. Watch this space for more.

Is Mallika Sherawat nude in Hissss?

Has Mallika Sherawat given a nude scene in her upcoming Hollywood film, Hissss is the first question that comes to mind after watching its trailer. Just recently, the first promo of the much in news anticipated Mallika Sherawat starrer Hissss is out and we must admit it does make for an interesting watch.
The promo gives the impression that it is a no nonsense thriller that is certainly not meant for the faint hearted as it has plenty of blood and gore. A surefire Adults Only certificate cannot be ruled out from Indian Censor Board.
The trailer shows Mallika Sherawat slithering in mud and becoming a deadly snake. She is shown covered in a body suit that fits her like second skin and during many times while watching the trailer it gives the impression that Mallika hasn’t worn anything. There are sequences shown with many murders happening. In one scene Mallika is shown slithering up a tree and baring her fangs and shocks your wits. Then in another scene she is shown transformed into a helpless woman. Also seen in the trailer are the film’s other Indian stars, Irrfan Khan and Divya Dutta.
The plot of Hissss revolves around a snake woman played by Mallika Sherawat looking for revenge. Irrfan and Divya Dutta play a couple and reportedly there is a very passionately shot love making scene between the two. The film appears high on special effects.

Three Salman Khan starrers in six weeks

All his recent flops notwithstanding, Salman Khan is all set to make a comeback with a huge bang. What with three of his big budget releases about to release within six weeks in July and August. Earlier there had been rumours about a possible clash between two of the Salman starrers – Prabhu Deva directed Wanted and Main Aur Mrs Khanna but this will not be the case as UTV has shifted Main Aur Mrs Khanna’s release date ahead. Now as Wanted is being readied for a 3rd July release while Main Aur Mrs Khanna has been shifted to 31st July. The other Salman starrer London Dreams is being readied for Independence Day on August 14th. We could also witness the first 100 crore clash ever on Independence Day as another heavyweight Blue is also expected on the same day and both films have a combine.
Salman Khan’s biggest venture of 2009, Veer however will make it to the cinema halls across the globe in 2009 end.
All the dates above however are all dependent on the multiplex revenue sharing issue being resolved in the next 4-6 weeks otherwise all release dates will be pushed ahead.

My Name Is Khan to be a 2010 release?

Bad news for Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol – Karan Johar fans if the strong buzz going around in the trade circles is to be believed. Our trade sources claim that Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions’ and SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment’s joint production My Name Is Khan might not release in December 2009 as it had earlier been scheduled. Its release is being postponed now to early 2010.
Sources tell us, “The on going producers v/s multiplex stand off has thrown the scheduled releases dates of many a biggies off the hook. The nearly two and a half months that have been wasted due to the strike is likely to create a heavy rush of releases at the box office once the issue sorts out. The makers of biggies have already begun plans to tread cautiously if such circumstances arrive. It would mean hara-kiri to release big ticket films together by letting their films cut into each other’s business. The reworking of release schedules of their films and pushing them ahead has started taking place. So most of the earlier scheduled big ticket June releases are now coming either in July or in August. Similarly, those earlier planned for August will now be pushed ahead to October – November what with the month of Ramzaan starting in August which generally sees no big release. Karan Johar’s Rensil D’Silva directed Saif-Kareena-Vivek Oberoi starrer Qurbaan has been planned for a November end release. With the heavy dates shuffling happening there may be a change in release date for it as well and be pushed ahead by a week or two. MNIK was scheduled as a mid December release that’s at least two weeks before Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots releases. But with all this happening it seems less likely that KJo and SRK would be able to squeeze in their film in between Qurbaan and 3 Idiots which releases on December 25th. So perhaps taking a safer route they must be intending to release it in early 2010.”
If this happens then SRK won’t have any major release in 2009 and his only release would be Dulha Mil Gaya which has him in an extended special appearance. -Sampurn Media

SRK waiting for feedback on team KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders team owner Shah Rukh Khan may be hundreds of miles away from his IPL team, who are currently playing in South Africa, but the Bollywood star wants constant feedback on how things are moving in the Knight Riders camp.
To serve this purpose, King Khan has asked co-owner Jay Mehta to keep a close watch on the boys and provide him a first-hand account on the latest developments.
The Kolkata team will play their final match of the IPL’s second season against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday but will end up at the bottom of the points table, irrespective of the result.
“As Shah Rukh didn’t go back to South Africa, Mehta is acting as his eyes and ears. It’s understood that Shah Rukh will be briefed on all matters once the edition ends,” sources told a newspaper.
According to reports, Mehta has already started working on his assignment and had conversations with the skipper Brendon McCullum as well as some other players.
Mehta is also expected to meet the support staff including John Buchanan and director Joy Bhattacharya, a meeting which is expected to decide the fate of several members of the team.

After Mumbai, Delhi is my favourite place: Katrina Kaif

The oppressive heat in the national capital doesn`t seem to have affected British-born actress Katrina Kaif`s enthusiasm to shoot here. She says she loves Delhi people and would love to make it her home after Mumbai.
"I really hope that someday I come to the capital for the film shoot. I have shot for different movies in all parts of the world but unfortunately not here. So I`m looking forward to that opportunity as I know it would be real fun," Katrina Kaif said at a press conference here.
"I come here very often but they are very short visits. I just love this place. If I have to decide where do I want to live after Mumbai, it would definitely be Delhi. Here I share amazing vibes with people and see so many friendly faces," she added.
Dressed in blue ankle-length jeans, red jersey and black sneakers, the actress looked casual and posed happily for the shutterbugs.
Katrina, who is the brand ambassador of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers (RC), was in the capital to cheer her team. The "Singh Is Kinng" star said that she wants IPL to be back in India.
"We all know the reasons why IPL`s venue was shifted to South Africa, but I would really like it to be back here again because the enthusiasm, craziness and fan following for cricket in India is simply amazing," she said.
"The whole experience is priceless. That is the time when we smile together and cry together," she added.
The 24-year-old also said: "We (actors) keep our fingers crossed on a Friday. Similarly, cricketers too wait till the last ball because the game is so unpredictable."
Meanwhile she is preparing for her performance at the IPL grand finale in Johannesburg May 24.
The actress will soon be seen in Prakash Jha`s political drama "Rajneeti" and Rajkumar Santoshi`s romantic comedy "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.

End of US dream? No takers for 20K H1B visas

Washington, May 20: Once the most sought after H-1B American work visa is still having nearly 20,000 slots open seven weeks after the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) started receiving applications for the financial year 2010 beginning October this year.
The USCIS yesterday said it has so far received approximately 45,500 H-1B petitions counting toward the Congressionally-mandated 65,000 cap. As such, the USCIS would continue to accept petitions subject to till the cap is reached.
This is in contrast of the previous few years when the USCIS had to resort to computerised draw of lots as it received petitions outnumbering several times more than the Congressional mandated cap of 65,000 within the first few days after it started receiving H-1B applications.
USCIS said it has received approximately 20,000 petitions for the advanced degrees category. However, it would continue to accept advanced degree petitions since experience has shown that not all petitions received are approvable, the USCIS said in a statement.
Congress mandated that the first 20,000 of these types of petitions are exempt from any fiscal year cap on available H-1B visas.
For the fiscal 2010, the USCIS started receiving H-1B petitions from April 1. In the first five working days, it received 42,000 H-1B petitions. In the month and half since then, USCIS has received juts 3,500 more H-1B petitions, indicating the slump in demand for H-1B work visas.
This is mainly attributed to the current economic crisis, high unemployment rate in the US and also partly to the anti-H-1B sentiment prevailing in the United States at present.
Under the stimulus package, US companies which receive federal money are prevented from hiring foreign workers under H-1B visas.
Further the US Department of Homeland Security has launched investigations into alleged fraud cases related to H-1B visas and has tightened the application approval process.
At least two legislations are also pending in the US Congress, which if passed would make H-1B visas tougher for foreign technology professionals.

Branding is important in Bollywood

Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai are perfect examples of being famous for their flops. Kareena Kapoor has had it easy, literally. It hasn’t exactly been a rough ride for the Kapoor babe from Day One itself. Even though she left the blockbuster role of female lead in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai against macho Hrithik Roshan to Ameesha Patel, she managed to garner much more publicity for her flop debut, Refugee, than what Ameesha did for her superhit starter. And that was the beginning of a new mantra to market a diva — hit or no hit, the Brand has to hit the headlines.
And it was this very marketing mantra which saw the rise, rise and only rise for Kareena Kapoor. Even after a spate of flops like Asoka, Yaadein, Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Jeena Sirf Tere Liya, etc the youngest Kapoor kid saw all the big names from Karan Johar to Yash Chopra to Mani Ratnam and Boney Kapoor vying for her attention. Film after film flopped, but nothing changed much for Bebo. She continued to demand very high rates, which paradoxically kept rising with each flop.
And following in her footsteps closely was none other than our very own grey-green eyed goddess, Aishwarya Rai who, in spite of not having given a single hit in the start of her career for very long hit the jackpot with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and is the most ‘sought-after’ Bollywood actress today.
So, this is the Bebo-Ash blockbuster story. What is it that makes the two divas eligible for the big league which otherwise has names like Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra who, by now, must have lost count of their hit films? “Both Ash and Bebo have class. I know them closely. They have talent as well as beauty, and I guess this combination is more than enough to please the audience. At the same time, one must not forget that Ash is a big international star,” asserts Showman Subhash Ghai who has earlier directed Ash in Taal and has done as many as three films with Kareena.
Film critic Indu Mirani punches in a more logical explanation to this unique phenomenon. “I think Aishwarya and Kareena are totally different girls as far as personality and presentation go. But their careers are similar in the sense that they have got all the good stuff in spite of not having hit films. I think it’s because there are very few actually hot leading ladies in the industry today. Rani, Preity and Priyanka cannot take up all the roles, right? There are very few A-grade heroines. And these two girls know how to present themselves. They are also very media-savvy and hence it has been easy for them,” she says.
But why isn’t it easy for other talented good-looking girls too as, say, Lara Dutta? Why hasn’t she matched up to this grade? “Kareena, of course, is a pedigreed girl. She has been lucky as she belongs to the Kapoor Khaandaan. She also had her sister Karisma, a superstar in her own right. For Ash, I think it’s more of media hype with her scintillating beauty helping in a big way.” explains Mirani.
And if we throw back a look, this trend doesn’t seem to be very new. There are examples in the past also where artistes, even though they hadn’t given a single hit, had dozens of movies in their kitty. For example, in the 80s, the pinup girl of that time, Sonam, had close to 40 films in her kitty even before her first film was out for review! Similar was the case with Chunky Panday who, apart from Aankhen with Govinda, has no film to be remember him by. But he was one of the hottest dial-a-quote stars of late 80s.
Production designer Bindiya Dutta, wife of filmmaker JP Dutta, and herself hyped as a Hema Malini clone in her heyday, has had the experience of working with Ash and Bebo; and sums it up. “For us, hits and flops are inconsequential. We are only here to do good work and definitely we choose our leading ladies according to what they suit best. Like Refugee wouldn’t have been the same without Kareena and Umrao Jaan without Ash was unimaginable.”

Bhutia decides to leave Mohun Bagan

Bhaichung Bhutia on Monday decided to part ways with Mohun Bagan in retaliation to the club's decision to serve him a show cause letter recently for missing the club's practice and an exhibition match in Jalpaiguri.
"I don't want to play for Mohun Bagan anymore," said the India skipper.
Bhutia, who reached here last night after taking part in a reality show, said the show cause letter was a publicity gimmick.
"It (the show cause) was a publicity gimmick. It could have been handled better. Anjan Mitra just needed to call me up," said Bhutia, who led Mohun Bagan this season.
The star striker said he has been asked to reconsider but it's unlikely he would do so.
"It's good for both of us to part ways. They are telling me to rethink but at the moment I have only one stand. I don't have any motivation left in me to play for Mohun Bagan," said Bhutia.
